Pilonidal disease is a chronic skin problem with hair-filled cavities in the cleft between the buttocks. A pilonidal cyst, which is a common condition caused by a skin infection, is a round sac of tissue that’s filled with air or fluid.

It can cause pain, especially if it’s located in the the tailbone and especially when sitting. It can be a one time problem if treated well but if not treated, it has a risk to turn into a chronic character.

Who can get a pilonidal cyst?

Anyone but certain people are at higher risk: Men are 3 or 4 times more likely than women, worker who sit longer hours while working (truck drivers, office workers), overweight/obese people, people who prefer wearing tight clothes, people with thick/dense body hair.

Is it contagious?

No, it’s not! Pilonidal cyst is just like a pimple and mostly caused by ingrown hairs.

What are the symptoms?

  • Increased pain when sitting,
  • A small dimple or large swollen area between your buttocks.
  • Foul-smelling fluid
  • Rare symptoms: nausea, fever and extreme tiredness (fatigue).

What are treatment options?

Your healthcare provider can make a small cut to drain the cyst but removal of ingrown hair inside should also be removed to prevent returning.  Using Leaving the wound open is an option that allows for healing inside out. The hair should be removed either by shaving or laser hair removal options to prevent hairs entering the wound.

Treatment of pilonidal disease with crystallized phenol also proved to be highly effective when compared to a surgical operation (classic excision).
